The spot electricity price is the wholesale price of electricity determined on the Nord Pool exchange for each hour. Finland's price is calculated separately as an area price (FI) — it may differ from Sweden's, Norway's or Estonia's if cross-border transmission capacity limits the market.
When you have a spot electricity contract, your energy price follows this hourly market price. Your electricity company adds a small margin (typically 0.3–1.0 c/kWh) and a monthly standing charge. The price shown on Verrokit already includes 25.5% VAT — this is what you pay per kilowatt-hour of energy.
The transmission (delivery to your home) is invoiced separately by your local grid operator — this cannot be competitively tendered.

Nord Pool publishes tomorrow's hourly spot prices on weekdays around 14:00 Finnish time. Once confirmed, prices update automatically to all price comparison services within minutes. Verrokit's chart shows tomorrow's bars as soon as they are available.
Spot electricity price is determined on the Nord Pool exchange by supply and demand, hour by hour. Prices are affected by production (wind availability, nuclear operation, water reservoir levels), consumption (weather, industrial demand, time of day), cross-border transmission capacity and fuel market prices. Finland's area price may differ from other Nordic countries due to transmission constraints.
A negative price means producers pay for the right to feed electricity into the grid. This happens when production (especially wind and solar) is significantly higher than consumption and electricity cannot be stored or transferred fast enough. For consumers, a negative hour means practically free electricity — but standing charges and transmission still cost.
The price shown by Verrokit is the spot price with 25.5% VAT already added. The full bill also includes the electricity company's margin (usually 0.3–1.0 c/kWh), the electricity company's standing charge (€0–7/month) and your local grid operator's transmission and standing charges (~4–7 c/kWh + €5–20/month). Transmission is always invoiced separately by the grid operator.
Spot electricity has been the cheapest option in Finland on average over the long term. It especially suits homes with geothermal heating, air-water heat pumps or time-controlled storage electric heating — these automatically benefit from cheap hours. Fixed-price fixed-term contracts provide protection against price risk and suit those valuing budget predictability. Hybrid contracts combine the best of both.
Schedule high-consumption devices (storage electric heating, EV charging, sauna, hot water heater, dishwasher, washing machine) to hours when the spot price is lowest. Many smart meters have time control that can automatically use the cheapest Nord Pool hours. Differences can be 5–15 cents per kWh, meaning hundreds of euros in annual savings for a heavy consumer.
