How does the calculator work?

The calculator combines three components to estimate your annual electricity consumption:

  1. Base household consumption — lighting, appliances, cooking, cold storage. Depends on housing type and number of residents (approx. 700–1,400 kWh per person per year).
  2. Heating — the biggest single component in Finnish homes. Direct electric heating uses ~100 kWh per m² per year in a well-insulated home. District heating means very little electricity for heating; heat pumps consume 20–40 kWh per m² per year.
  3. Add-ons — electric hot water heater (~750 kWh per person/year), sauna (200–1,000 kWh/year depending on frequency), EV charging (0.18 kWh per km).

How accurate is this electricity consumption estimate?

The estimate is a good starting point (±20%) but not a substitute for actual consumption data. If you have been living in your home for over a year, the exact annual consumption is on your electricity bill or in your grid operator's online portal. Use the exact number when it's available — the calculator is best for new homes, planned moves or homes without a full year of data.

What affects electricity consumption the most?

Heating is by far the biggest factor. Electric heating in a detached house can add 15,000–25,000 kWh per year, while an apartment with district heating consumes only 1,500–3,000 kWh/year for lighting and appliances. Other big consumers: hot water heater (2,500 kWh/yr for a family of 4), sauna (500–1,000 kWh/yr with weekly use), EV charging (2,500 kWh per 15,000 km).

What contract type suits my consumption?

For low consumption (under 3,000 kWh/yr): a low standing charge matters most, spot electricity works well. For medium consumption (3,000–10,000 kWh/yr): spot electricity is often cheapest, but fixed-term suits stability seekers.
