Finland's electricity system

Finland's electricity is produced by a diverse mix of sources. Nuclear power (Loviisa 1 & 2, Olkiluoto 1, 2 & 3) provides a steady baseload of roughly 4,400 MW when all units are running. Hydropower (concentrated in Kemijoki, Iijoki and Oulujoki river systems) provides flexible balancing capacity of up to 3,000 MW.

Wind power has grown dramatically — in 2026 Finland has over 8,000 MW of installed wind capacity, providing 15–30% of production depending on wind conditions. On windy hours, wind power alone can cover nearly half of Finland's demand.

Combined heat and power (CHP) — both district heating CHP and industrial CHP — provides significant baseload especially in winter when heating demand is high. Solar power is still small but growing rapidly, particularly during summer months.

Finland is net importer of electricity on many hours — mainly from Sweden and Norway (cheap hydro), and Estonia. Import/export balance depends on price differences: electricity flows to the cheaper price area.

How production affects your electricity bill

The production mix directly drives the Nord Pool spot price — which in turn is what you pay for spot electricity contracts. Simplified:

  • High wind → low price. Wind has near-zero marginal cost, so when wind covers a large share, the marginal (price-setting) plant is cheap.
  • Cold + no wind → high price. Winter demand is high (heating), if wind is low, expensive gas or condensation plants must run.
  • Nuclear outages → higher price. Losing 800–1,600 MW of nuclear baseload pushes up prices, especially in winter.
  • Imports/exports smooth prices. When Sweden/Norway have plenty of hydro, they export cheap electricity to Finland → price stays down.

How is electricity produced in Finland?

Finland's electricity mix is diverse: nuclear power (approx. 30–40%), wind power (15–30% depending on wind), hydropower (10–20%), combined heat and power (both district heating CHP and industrial CHP), and small amounts of solar, condensation and biomass. About 15–25% of consumption is imported from Sweden, Norway or Estonia when it is cheaper than producing domestically.

What share of Finland's electricity is renewable?

The renewable share varies constantly by hour. Overall around 55–65% of Finland's electricity in 2026 is renewable (wind, hydro, solar and biomass CHP). During windy conditions this share can rise above 80%, while on cold windless nights it may drop to 40–50% when thermal plants run at full capacity.

How does electricity production affect the price?

The spot electricity price on Nord Pool is directly driven by the production mix. When wind is high, cheap wind power meets much of demand and the price is low. When nuclear plants are on outage or the wind is calm during cold weather, more expensive gas or condensation plants must be started, and the price rises.
