About electricity contracts

Why compare electricity

Electricity prices vary by 1–3 cents per kilowatt-hour between providers — that means hundreds of euros per year.

Spot or fixed-term?

With a spot contract the price follows the hourly Nord Pool market. Best for consumers who can flex their consumption — overnight and early morning prices are usually the lowest. Over the long term, spot is often the cheapest choice, but expensive winter hours can lift the bill.

A fixed-term contract locks the price for 6–36 months. This gives budgeting predictability, but if the market drops during the term you do not benefit. A good choice if your consumption is high or your situation is inflexible.

Switching is easy

Switching providers takes 2–4 weeks and is free to you. The new provider handles everything: contacting your old provider, notifying the grid operator and starting billing on the agreed date.

You only need the metering point identifier from your current bill and your personal ID. Signing up usually takes a few minutes on the provider site — you do not need your old contract or its end date.

What makes up your electricity bill?

An electricity bill consists of three parts: 1) Energy price (c/kWh) — switchable, 2) Monthly fee (€/mo) — switchable, 3) Grid transfer (operator) — not switchable, because the grid operator is determined by your address.

The Verrokit comparison focuses on the first two — the ones you can influence. Savings come from a combination of a cheaper energy price and a lower monthly fee — our €/mo estimate combines both based on the annual consumption you provide.

How does Verrokit pick providers?

We compare the largest and most trusted electricity retailers in Finland: Cheap Energy, Oomi Energia, Fortum, Hehku Energia, Aalto Energia, Nordic Green Energy and Vattenfall. Each provider holds a licence from the Finnish Energy Authority.

Ranking is based on price alone — we do not steer users toward more expensive products. We earn a commission from providers when you sign a contract, but this does not affect the ranking or the price you see.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does spot-priced electricity mean?
With a spot-priced contract, the electricity price follows the hourly Nord Pool Nordic power exchange. The provider adds a small margin (typically 0.3–0.8 c/kWh) on top of the spot price plus a monthly fee (€2–6/mo). Spot pricing is often the cheapest option if you can shift consumption to cheaper hours (overnight EV charging, dishwasher, sauna). Prices can spike in winter — be prepared for variation.
What is a fixed-term electricity contract?
In a fixed-term contract the c/kWh price is locked for the contract period — usually 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. The price does not rise or fall during the term, giving you predictable bills. If the market drops you do not benefit, and early cancellation can carry a fee. Best suited to consumers who value a stable monthly bill.
How much can I save by comparing electricity contracts?
Savings depend on your current contract and consumption. A typical apartment household (1500–3000 kWh/yr) can save €50–250 per year by switching to a cheaper offer. An electrically heated detached house (15 000–22 000 kWh/yr) can save €600–1500 per year. Enter your annual consumption in the comparison tool to see euro-denominated monthly estimates from every provider.
Can I switch electricity contract any time?
Yes — an ongoing contract can be cancelled at any time, with a typical 2-week notice. A fixed-term contract can be cancelled after the term, or earlier with a fee. Switching is always free to the end customer, and the new provider handles the transition — you do not need to notify the old provider or the local grid operator separately.
What is the difference between energy fee, monthly fee, and grid transfer?
Energy fee (c/kWh) depends on consumption — you pay for what you use. Monthly fee (€/mo) is a fixed recurring fee regardless of consumption. These two appear in our comparison and apply to the electricity retailer you can choose. Grid transfer is a separate cost from your local grid operator (Caruna, Helen, Elenia, etc.) — you cannot switch grid operators since they are determined by your address.
What does green electricity and certificate of origin mean?
Green electricity means the provider ensures it purchases the same amount of renewable energy (wind, hydro, solar) on the market as its customers consume. This is verified by certificates of origin — an EU-supervised international system. Many Finnish providers (Fortum, Nordic Green Energy, Aalto Energia's Huoleton) sell 100 % renewable. Green electricity is typically the same price or only slightly more than conventional.
Is the Verrokit comparison free?
Verrokit is completely free for users. We earn a commission from providers when you sign a contract via our links — this does not affect the price you see and does not influence our ranking. Products are always listed honestly cheapest-first, based on the lowest monthly bill for your annual consumption.
Which electricity provider offers the cheapest electricity?
The cheapest provider depends on your consumption and contract type. The lowest spot margins are currently Aalto Energia's Luotsi Pörssisähkö (0.34 c/kWh) and Hehku Pörssi (0.35 c/kWh). For fixed-term contracts, Cheap Energy and Hehku Energia usually offer the lowest 6-month prices. Use our comparison tool — enter your annual consumption to see euro estimates from every provider.
