Hybrid electricity contract — between spot and fixed pricing

A hybrid electricity contract (Finnish: hybridisähkösopimus) splits your consumption between spot pricing and a fixed rate — typically 50/50, 70/30, or 30/70. You get part of spot’s low average price plus part of fixed’s predictability. This guide explains how hybrids work and when they beat the alternatives.

What is a hybrid contract?

A hybrid splits your kWh consumption into two portions. For example, in a 50/50 hybrid with 5 000 kWh annual consumption: 2 500 kWh is billed at spot price + spot margin, 2 500 kWh is billed at a locked fixed rate (e.g. 9 c/kWh). Your monthly bill is the weighted sum.

Common hybrid splits

• 50/50 spot/fixed — balanced. Reduces both upside and downside vs pure spot or pure fixed.
• 70/30 spot/fixed — favours spot. Most of the benefit of spot, with some predictability cushion.
• 30/70 spot/fixed — favours fixed. Most of the predictability of fixed, with some spot upside in low-price periods.

Pros and cons

• Pro: Risk diversification — extreme spot spikes affect only part of your bill.
• Pro: Captures some spot savings — average price typically lower than pure fixed.
• Pro: Predictable component — fixed portion gives baseline stability.
• Con: Complex to compare — multiple variables (spot margin, fixed rate, split %) make benchmarking harder.
• Con: Slightly worse than optimal — never as cheap as pure spot in good years, never as protective as pure fixed in crisis years.
• Con: Fewer providers offer — hybrids are less common than spot/fixed in the Finnish market.

Who should choose a hybrid?

Hybrid contracts work best for: a) high-consumption households (electrically heated detached homes) where reducing risk matters, b) people who want to ”try” spot pricing without full exposure, c) those who couldn’t decide between pure spot and pure fixed, d) consumers wanting to ”DIY” risk reduction.
