15-minute price
The 15-minute price is the Nord Pool electricity area price that updates every 15 minutes. From late 2025 it has replaced the previous hourly price in Finland and other Nord Pool countries.
The move from hourly to 15-minute pricing is part of European market harmonisation. It gives a finer price signal: 15-minute periods track supply and demand more precisely than an hour at a time.
For consumers, the 15-minute price means four price points per hour. Not all retailers have billing systems that support 15-minute pricing yet — some are transitioning gradually, some still use hourly pricing in customer contracts even though the Nord Pool data is already in quarter-hours.
For an active spot user, the 15-minute price opens new possibilities: you can time your EV charging or water heater start to the exact cheapest quarter of the day, down to 15-minute precision.
Why did we switch from hourly to 15-minute prices?
EU market harmonisation (CACM regulation) requires 15-minute market time units. Main reasons:
Finer price signal — wind and solar variation show up faster.
Better balancing — supply and demand are matched more accurately, reducing balancing energy needs.
Rewarding flexibility — customers who can shift consumption to 15-minute precision gain more value.
The switch began in Finland in 2024 and completed by late 2025. Nord Pool now publishes 4 prices per hour, not one.
What does 15-minute pricing mean for consumers?
If your contract supports 15-minute pricing, your monthly bill is calculated in 15-minute slices: (15-min consumption × 15-min spot price). Most large retailers have transitioned (Vattenfall, Fortum, Nordic Green Energy, Vihreä Älyenergia) — smaller ones in stages.
If your contract still uses hourly pricing, the average of the 4 quarters is your hourly price. The practical difference is small but precision improves.
Check your contract: find it in the "contract terms" or the online service under "pricing".
15-minute pricing and real savings
15-minute pricing opens optimisation options for active customers:
EV charging — smart chargers (e.g. Easee, Zaptec) can be programmed to charge only on the cheapest quarters.
Water heater — modern controllers (e.g. Shelly, Fibaro) can start precisely on the cheapest 15-minute slots.
Heat pump — rarer in Finland but possible with 15-min integration.
Savings from 15-minute precision vs hourly average are typically 2–5 % extra optimisation — e.g. 500 kWh/month ≈ €1–3/month.
Frequently asked questions
Does my contract use 15-minute or hourly pricing?
Check your contract confirmation or online service. Most Finnish spot products use 15-minute pricing from the start of 2026 — smaller retailers transition in phases.
Do I save more on 15-minute than hourly pricing?
Yes, if you have smart devices (EV, water heater) that can be timed to 15-minute precision. Savings are typically 2–5 % of monthly consumption — small but cumulative over a year.
Does 15-minute pricing affect fixed-price contracts?
Not directly — in fixed-price contracts the c/kWh is locked regardless of Nord Pool precision. It affects indirectly: finer market pricing can lower long-term prices across contracts.
